Federal Reserve Reduces Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank reduced borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second rate cut in the current year amid financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically studies BLS data to assess employment trends, including the number of employment gains added to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in early September, before the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of jobs created to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s employment data in early October, it suspended its publication once the closure started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported recently that the private sector eliminated 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell said recently, which he had earlier said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Reveals Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that costs are rising, albeit slowly. Costs rose three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
