An defense official has stated that the MoD is currently examining the potential security risks posed by Chinese cars, while personnel have been instructed to refrain from talking about classified matters in any vehicles.
Security Advice for MoD Personnel
During a recent appearance on LBC, a defence minister addressed claims that Ministry of Defence staff have been instructed not to talk about secret information while riding in Chinese cars.
The minister explained that the ministry is “investigating” cars from China within its vehicle pools, however stressed that safety is a concern in every contemporary cars.
We have a collection of tens of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and Chinese ones represent a tiny fraction.
But regardless of if you’re driving a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, our instruction to our people is to avoid connecting MoD devices into their vehicle, to avoid having discussions at a secret level in any car, because of the increasing risks of surveillance that are present in every single vehicle, to restrict those confidential conversations in secure locations. That’s a prudent and reasonable thing for everyone concerned about security.
After it was suggested that it would be prudent for the ministry to cease using all Chinese vehicles, the minister replied: ‘That’s precisely what we’re investigating at the present time.”
Wider Security Context
This announcement follows claims from Norway and Denmark have warned the United Kingdom to the presence of dual-use kill switches in Chinese electric buses, which could allow China to disable buses and cause chaos to public transit.
Furthermore, a Russia spy ship was reportedly directing laser beams at RAF pilots, labeled a “highly dangerous” act by defence officials.
This wider defence situation highlights the significance of robust protocols and vigilance in all aspects of official operations, from vehicle use to discussions habits.
