In a notable move ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the wake of widespread and fatal youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Address Youth Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.
"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.
The September uprising was sparked by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of systemic graft in politics.
Details of the New Political Partnership
According to the formal pact, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the country's older political leadership. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in forming the interim government that took over after the previous administration was removed.
Broader Political Consultations Underway
In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with a number of leading political figures. These discussions included former prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the protests.
After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and open atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
